FIBA World Cup tournament structure

The basketball tournament starts with 32 teams that qualify for the competition by participating in regional qualifying tournaments - FIBA Europe qualifications, FIBA Americas qualifications, FIBA Africa qualifications and FIBA Asia & Oceania qualifications. Some national teams qualify directly by ranking in top positions in regional championships, such as FIBA Eurobasket in Europe. The national teams are typically divided into 8 groups, each with 4 teams. The best two teams in each group qualify for the second round and form additional 4 groups with 4 teams in each group. The worst performing teams in the first round also form 4 classification groups, with 4 teams in each group. After the second round, the best two teams from each group move to the knockout stage to the quarterfinals.
